Children with ADHD at risk for binge eating, study shows

Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, are significantly more likely to have an eating disorder — a loss of control eating syndrome (LOC-ES) — akin to binge eating, a condition more generally diagnosed only in adults, according to results of a new study. The findings suggest a common biological mechanism linking the two disorders, and the potential for developing treatment that works for both.

QEEG Neurofeedback in the Diagnosis and Treatment of PTSD

QEEG guided neurofeedback has given us the ability to diagnose and treat serious disorders such as PTSD through concrete evidence of neural activity. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) may occur in individuals who have been victims of traumatic events that are outside the range of our usual human experience. The trauma may be the result of physical or sexual abuse, serious accidents or combat. Individual who suffer from PTSD often live in a world of extreme hyper-vigilance, anxiety, and isolation and may suffer from disturbing nightmares and flashbacks. Conventional treatment for PTSD typically involves long-term psychotherapy and continuous use of medications that may mask symptoms rather than addressing the root cause. All too often, clients become discouraged and end therapy prematurely before they are truly

Helping Patients with Binge Eating Disorder Drop the Weight (Mentality)

A woman, who reported she struggles with Binge Eating Disorder, contacted me recently online. She was scheduled to participate in a medical weight-loss program but wondered if she should address her BED first. Unfortunately, this woman is not the only person with BED who has fallen prey to the weight-loss industry. One of the most challenging things in my work with patients with BED is disavowing them of the diet and weight mentality. Most patients come in with a significant diet history and, despite many failed diet attempts, are intent on losing weight in treatment via the latest diet trends.I’ve found through the years that with some patients, getting them to commit to working on their binges, rather than focusing on weight, is a

With support from family and friends I am coping with depression and anxiety

This blog talks about issues that may be triggering to some readers This is the story of the last few years of my life – it’s about times when I’ve been unwell, but still felt able to talk about my mental health issues. When I started university in 2011 I began to seek help for a few aspects of my health and well-being that had been bothering me – I found out that I have dyslexia, that I may have ADD, and that I experience anxiety and depression. Searching back through my life during therapy sessions at university helped me to look at the root causes of my mental health issues; my granddad passed away in 2010 and this left a hole in my life. It turned out there

Dr. Laura Bumberry is now Certified in Family Based Treatment

April, 2015 Dear Colleagues, I am pleased to announce that my colleague, Dr. Laura Bumberry, has completed certification as a Family Based Treatment (FBT) provider. As you know, FBT is an evidence-based treatment and the treatment of choice for adolescents with anorexia nervosa; recent research suggests it is also efficacious with adolescents struggling with bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. We are lucky to have one of the two certified FBT providers in the state of Missouri right here at Webster Wellness Professionals! The certification process, thru the Training Institute for Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders, was designed by Daniel LeGrange, PhD, and James Locke, MD, the developers of FBT. In addition to a 2-day workshop at Stanford University, Dr. Bumberry read numerous research and clinical articles

Treating Eating Disorders with Co-Occurring Trauma and PTSD

In this video interview, Executive Director Diane Ryan and Trauma Therapist Ann Twilley describe how and why Mirasol Eating Disorder Treatment Centers developed its specialization in treatment of eating disorders with co-occurring complex trauma and PTSD. “Years ago most eating disorder treatment centers — Mirasol included — did not include trauma as part of their treatment programs. In fact, people were turned away if they reported significant trauma before we admitted them,” says Ryan. “So it became evident that that was not going to work, we were not going to be able to take care of people if we weren’t willing to address the traumatic issues in their lives because it was too closely tied in with the eating disorder.” Your browser does not

On Our Radar: Unicorn Love

Jessie Oleson is a writer, illustrator, baker, and also someone who’s dealt with eating disorders.  We love her blog Cakespy.com, but especially the section of her site “Unicorn Love” which delves directly into this latter issue. It’s so honest, articulate, easy-to-read-and-relate to, and shows the imperfect side of what could be perceived as a very sweet life. FYI Jessie donates a portion of all profits from her online store to eating disorder awareness and treatment.

Fitspo: how strong became the new skinny

Health has become fetishised on social media by ‘fitspiration’ devotees posting pictures of ‘clean’ food and gym-tight abs. But does the trend inspire better living – or is it promoting a new form of body fascism?Last week, after a cancer benefit honouring her doctor friend, the singer Pink shut down critics who said she had gained weight with a tweet declaring that she felt beautiful and secure. It was a rare moment: a celebrity openly acknowledging the trolls, straight from her phone, then choosing to ignore them and look after her “healthy, voluptuous and crazy strong body” instead.Pink’s mainstream use of the word “strong” is worth noting; the mantra “strong is the new skinny” has been gaining currency online among female gym devotees for
