Windows 10, Wearables, Internet Wizardry To Converge At Taipei Show

It’s hard to tell this year and last year apart by looking at headline figures for Computex Taipei, the world’s second largest computer show. Around 5,000 stalls at the show that opens June 2 will flog everything from new laptops to Internet-based schemes to make home appliances run on their own, a lot like

Let’s stop the bullying of trainee doctors – for patients’ sake

Bullying is not just a problem for women, or surgeons or even just the medical profession. 'At Their Mercy' Four CornersSize matters. At least, that seems to be the media’s belief when it comes to analysing social problems. The grimmer the stories, the uglier the experience, the more bodies at the bottom of the cliff, the better. And last night’s episode of ABC TV’s Four Corners didn’t disappoint, with its expose on bullying among surgeons and the devastating consequences this entrenched practice has for its victims, both in the short and long term. Despite casting their net wide, the show’s producers found only three medical professionals who haven’t spoken out about this issue before, and only two chose to be identified. Imogen Ibbett and Vyom Sharma

Tried and tested: Cafe Du Cycliste Fleurette jersey

It’s not so long ago that cycling gear was either very logo heavy (think team jersey’s) or just very dull, and it certainly wasn’t cool. Now there are fab brands popping up all over the place and there is actually CHOICE, which for female cyclists is pretty much unheard of. I’ve long been a fan of Cafe Du Cycliste, the French brand giving Rapha a run for their money in the style stakes, so when they offered the Fleurette top to test I jumped at the chance. (Note: The top is black, as shown in the last image in the gallery, not brown as it looks in these images taken on a sunny day) Click on the images below for a picture-by-

Dear Mark: Your Milk Questions Answered

For today’s Dear Mark, I’m responding to as many of the questions and concerns relayed in the comment section of last week’s raw milk post. You guys had a lot of them, ranging from whether raw milk can help with eczema and adult asthma, if homogenization is dangerous, why raw milk might taste and smell fishy, to how many people get sick from pasteurized milk. I also respond to reports of raw milk not being a panacea for immune health, and even an active impediment to it. Lots of ground is covered today, so let’s get right to it. Here we go: Is homogenization dangerous? The initial hypothesis posited by Dr. Kurt Oster was that homogenization unleashes for full absorption an atherosclerotic enzyme

All the Good Eats

Happy Memorial Day! Did you have a nice weekend? We had a great one! We spent a lot of time outside… and a lot of time inside because we painted our master bedroom! Some more on that tomorrow, though. Stupid = me feeding Claire in a walker. I swear, just last week, I could ‘park’ this in front of an object like a chair and she wouldn’t move. But she’s figured out how to navigate better; hence the food all over the place. Thank goodness for Maggie and her bottomless appetite… And I’m on my way to buy the IKEA high chair (by your popular vote) this week! I’ve had a few requests to post more meal ideas, so I grabbed my camera this weekend and tried

Today is about changing perspective.

Sure, if you reside in the USA it’s also Memorial Day, but I’m seizing today to shift some thoughts which no longer serve me. I’m taking today (to pause and remember those who have died in service of our country and) to make time for something I’d professed to be too busy for and which I need to make a priority. Today is about changing perspective literally in hopes it changes my perspective metaphorically. It’s as the inimitable Wayne Dyer says: If we shift/tweak the way we view things in our lives, the things we are viewing change. Health Check: four reasons to have another cup of coffee

Systematic reviews of the research judge the current evidence as mostly in favour of drinking coffee. momente/ShutterstockSome like it hot, some like it iced, and some just don’t like it at all. Until recently, coffee was on the list of habits to break if you really wanted to be healthy. Not anymore. Systematic reviews of the research – the most powerful method to weigh up scientific evidence – judge the current evidence as mostly in favour of drinking coffee. Coffee drinking is linked to a decreased risk of premature death, type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer. However, some people will need to be cautious of the amount. Heavy coffee intake has been linked to an increased risk of lung cancer and can exacerbate heart problems.
