Boston Playwright Will Donate Proceeds From “Voices of We” to Local Women’s Organizations

The Voices of We,” a new play by Boston-area stage and screenwriter Robbi D’Allessandro, is making its world premiere April 25 to May 9 at the the Boston Playwrights Theatre.

D’Allessandro is donating the proceeds from all performances to nonprofit organizations that benefit women in need, including Our Bodies Ourselves.

The performances benefiting OBOS are on Saturday, May 2, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, May 3, at 2 p.m. Judy Norsigian, OBOS co-founder and former executive director, will take part in a talk-back with the audience following the show on Saturday night.

“Voices of We” explores the challenges women face as they try to contend with societal norms and expectations. The play addresses such issues as domestic violence, the struggle for reproductive rights, gender identity and sexual orientation, motherhood, positive body image, and more.

From the description:

While the struggles of these characters are dramatic and often deeply sorrowful, the play is tempered with humor and insight that holds the mind captive. Whether it be the comedic and all too urgent experience of a mother-to-be forced to give birth in the backseat of a broken down car, with no one to help but her hapless husband, or the frantic call from a child to a 911 dispatch operator to report a domestic violence incident still in progress, the women in “The Voices Of We” enter the depths of their own struggle with vulnerability and shame.

We’re hugely grateful to D’Allessandro for her generous support — and excited to share the honor with Casa Myrna, GLAD, The Cambridge Women’s Center, and other terrific Boston-area organizations!
