Common Serving Size Questions

photo of foods and Serving Sizes

Hi Everyone,

Today we are taking a look at some commonly questioned foods when it comes to servings. As always, your body has needs unique to you. Nourishing yourself in a way that meets those unique needs is what’s most important.

When it comes to a serving size, it is what it is. A serving is a measured amount of food or drink. This measured amount contains a specific amount of macro or micronutrients (kcalories, fat, protein, carbohydrate, vitamin C, etc.) based on the components of the particular food or drink.

Ex: One serving of bread has 15 grams of carbohydrates

A portion is the amount of that serving you choose to feed yourself to meet your hunger, energy, nutrient, and lifestyle needs.

Ex: Two servings of bread is your “portion of bread” so you can make yourself a sandwich.

Guidelines around portions provide us with just that, guidance. Adding professional guidance from a nutrition expert (such as your registered dietitian), can help you learn what the best serving size is for you. This can be very helpful in developing the skill of nourishing your body in a healthy and happy way!
